For the Things You Don’t Want Hanging Around

Author: Andrea and Mike Dickinson

We’re Andrea and Mike Dickinson, a husband-and-wife team who have spent years figuring out how to get unwanted things out of the house — although we came to that knowledge in very different ways. Andrea learned stain removal the way most people actually do: by spilling things, washing things incorrectly, trying advice that sounded promising, and occasionally making a small stain much worse. Years of looking after a home turned that trial and error into a practical knowledge of fabrics, carpets, upholstery, laundry, odors, and everyday cleaning problems. Mike’s experience is much more professional. Pest removal is his line of work, so he approaches ants, cockroaches, rodents, wasps, bed bugs, and other unwanted visitors by first figuring out why they are there. LearnHowToGetRid.com brings those two perspectives together. Andrea writes as someone who has tested household fixes in an actual home. Mike writes as someone accustomed to diagnosing a problem before trying to eliminate it. We do not believe every problem needs a complicated solution. We do believe you should know what you are dealing with before reaching for the nearest bottle, trap, spray, or internet remedy.

When the Fall Comes In, the Asian Lady Beetles Come Inside

Posted on October 19, 2026October 21, 2026 By Andrea and Mike Dickinson

Every fall, as combines harvest soybean fields across the American Midwest, hundreds of orange lady beetles appear on some homes. They gather on sunny exterior walls first. Soon afterward, homeowners find them around windows and sometimes in upstairs rooms. In pest control, I would start by checking where those insects…

Over the years of working with pests, I have used all kinds of insecticides and professional equipment, but I had never seriously thought about who first came up with the idea of putting insecticide into a small metal can. Recently, out of pure curiosity, I started researching how people used…

Hairspray Used to Remove Ink Stains, Until the Formula Changed

Posted on October 4, 2026October 2, 2026 By Andrea and Mike Dickinson

A few years ago, I remembered an old household trick I used to rely on quite often. I noticed a ballpoint pen mark on a light-colored shirt and, without much thought, grabbed the hairspray from the bathroom. I was pretty sure it would work. After all, the same trick had…

Why Old Carpet Stains Keep Coming Back and How to Tackle Them

Posted on October 2, 2026October 20, 2026 By Andrea and Mike Dickinson

A carpet stain can disappear after cleaning and return several days later because part of the spill is still sitting lower in the fibers, backing, or underlay. I used to assume a returning stain meant I had not scrubbed hard enough. Usually, I had done the opposite of what was…

Stink bugs did not announce their arrival in America with one massive outbreak. People around Allentown, Pennsylvania, simply began noticing unfamiliar brown insects around their homes. At first, a few bugs would not have looked like much. Insects get carried into houses all the time. Repeated sightings are different. Bugs…

That Pink Ring in Your Shower Is Bacteria and Here’s What Causes It

Posted on September 28, 2026October 5, 2026 By Andrea and Mike Dickinson

Pink or orange marks around shower grout have annoyed me more times than I care to admit. I would scrub them away, congratulate myself on a clean bathroom, and then notice the same color creeping back around the drain or along a damp grout line. My first guess was soap….
